Flying into Shanghai and heading to the China Flow Retreat in the Wuyishan mountains? This guide covers every step of the journey from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (上海虹桥国际机场) to Jiangxi Village (浆溪村), where the retreat is held at the Futures Resort (福雀来FUTURES).
The great news: Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is directly connected to one of China’s busiest high-speed rail stations — Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) — making the connection seamless. From there, fast trains whisk you south to the Wuyishan area in just a few hours.
📍 Origin: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (上海虹桥国际机场) — 31.196° N, 121.340° E
📍 Destination: Jiangxi Village, Yangzhuang, Wuyishan, Fujian (浆溪村) — 27.809° N, 117.948° E
📏 Distance: ~600 km (370 mi) by road | ~500 km by rail
⏱ Total travel time: ~5 – 5.5 hours door-to-door
Route Overview
The journey takes you from Shanghai in eastern China, southwest through Zhejiang and into the mountains of northern Fujian province. By high-speed rail, the trip covers approximately 500 km in just over 3 hours — one of the great advantages of China’s world-class rail network.
There are two route options, both using the high-speed train:
🚄 Option A — Via Wuyishan North Station (~5h total)
🚄 Option B — Via Nanping City Station (~5.5h total)
Three legs: walk/shuttle → high-speed train → taxi. The fastest and most recommended option.
⏱ Total journey time: ~4h 30min – 5h 30min (including airport + station waiting)
📍 Minhang District, Shanghai
⏰ Allow 30–45 minutes after landing for immigration, baggage claim & customs
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is one of Shanghai’s two major airports (the other being Pudong). It primarily handles domestic flights and some short-haul international routes. After clearing customs, follow signs to the Arrivals Hall.
💡 Tip: Get a local SIM card or pocket WiFi at the airport — WeChat and Alipay are essential in China. Most airport convenience stores and kiosks sell tourist SIM cards (¥50–100).
🚶 Transport: Indoor walkway / shuttle
⏱ Duration: 5–10 minutes
💰 Cost: Free
This is the beauty of Hongqiao — the airport and the railway station are in the same transport hub! Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) is directly connected to Terminal 2 via an indoor walkway.
Step-by-step:
- Exit the arrivals hall and follow signs for “Railway Station” (火车站) or “High-Speed Rail” (高铁)
- Walk through the connecting corridor (covered, air-conditioned, well-signposted in English and Chinese)
- If arriving at Terminal 1, take the free inter-terminal shuttle or Metro Line 10 one stop to Terminal 2, then walk to the railway station
- The railway station is one of the largest in China — allow time to navigate
💡 Tip: If you arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport (浦东机场) instead, you’ll need to take the Metro (Line 2, ~1.5 hours) or a taxi (~1 hour, ¥200+) to reach Hongqiao Railway Station.
🚄 Transport: CRH High-Speed Rail (G-series or D-series trains)
📏 Distance: ~530 km by rail
⏱ Duration: 3h 00min – 3h 30min
💰 Cost: ~¥300–400 RMB second class (~€38–50) | ~¥500–650 first class (~€62–80)
Step-by-step:
- Enter Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) — one of China’s mega stations
- Go through security screening (bags through X-ray, similar to airports)
- Find the ticket office or use self-service machines — passport scanning is available at the machines
- Buy a ticket for 武夷山北 (Wǔyíshān Běi)
- 💡 Pre-book on Trip.com or 12306.cn to guarantee a seat — especially during holidays or Golden Week
- Allow 30–45 minutes before departure for security, finding your platform, and boarding
- Board the train — second class (二等座) is very comfortable with assigned seats, power outlets, and WiFi
- The train speeds through the Yangtze Delta, past Hangzhou, and into the green mountains of Fujian at up to 300 km/h
- Enjoy the spectacular views: rice paddies, river valleys, forested hills, and tea terraces
- Arrive at Wuyishan North Station (武夷山北站)
💡 Tips:
- Chinese railways release tickets 15 days in advance — book early during peak seasons
- Foreigners can use passports at the manual check-in channel at the station entrance
- The train has a dining car and trolley service for snacks and drinks
- Plugs are available under each seat pair (Chinese standard + USB)
🚕 Transport: Pre-arranged car, taxi, or Didi
📏 Distance: ~16 km (10 mi)
⏱ Duration: ~30 minutes (mountain roads)
💰 Cost: ~¥80–120 RMB (~€10–15)
Step-by-step:
- Exit Wuyishan North Station from the main exit
- Either take an official taxi from the station rank, or have a pre-arranged driver meet you (recommended)
- Tell the driver: “洋庄浆溪村” (Yángzhuāng Jiāngxī Cūn)
- The route heads west on the Ningshang Expressway (G1514) toward Yangzhuang
- Exit the expressway and turn south onto local mountain roads
- Pass through Yangzhuang Town (洋庄镇) and continue into the valley
- The last 10–15 min is on narrow, winding village roads through bamboo groves and tea gardens
- Arrive at Jiangxi Village (浆溪村) and the Futures Resort (福雀来FUTURES)
💡 Tips:
- Pre-arrange the driver from the retreat if possible — random taxis may not know the exact village
- Have the Chinese address saved on your phone: 浆溪村, 洋庄镇, 武夷山市, 福建省
- Phone signal may become patchy in the last few kilometres
- 🚨 Motion sickness warning for the last section if sensitive — winding mountain roads
✅ Total journey time (Option A): ~4h 30min – 5h 30min (including airport processing + station waiting)
✅ Total transfers: 1 (walk to train station → train → taxi)
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport & Railway Station Hub
Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station are part of the same massive transport complex. Terminal 2 connects directly to the railway station via an indoor walkway — you don’t even need to go outside. This makes the airport-to-train connection one of the most seamless in China.
Shanghai Hongqiao → Wuyishan North by High-Speed Rail
The high-speed train covers the ~530 km distance in around 3 to 3.5 hours, passing through Zhejiang province and into the mountains of northern Fujian. The route takes you through some of China’s most beautiful countryside — from the flat Yangtze Delta through progressively more mountainous terrain.
Wuyishan North Station → Jiangxi Village
The final leg is a short 30-minute taxi ride from Wuyishan North Station west to Jiangxi Village. The route follows the Ningshang Expressway before turning off onto scenic mountain roads through tea plantations and bamboo forests. The Bing Maps route shows 16 min / 9.9 mi — allow 30 minutes for real-world conditions on the winding village roads.
An alternative route if trains to Wuyishan North are fully booked or if timing works better.
⏱ Total journey time: ~5h 00min – 6h 00min (including airport + station waiting)
The first two steps are identical to Option A — arrive at the airport and walk to the railway station. The difference is the train destination and the final taxi ride.
🚄 Transport: CRH High-Speed Rail
📏 Distance: ~480 km by rail
⏱ Duration: 3h 00min – 3h 30min
💰 Cost: ~¥280–380 RMB second class (~€35–47)
Nanping City Station (南平市站) is on the same rail line as Wuyishan North. Some trains stop at Nanping but not at Wuyishan North, so this can be a useful alternative if the direct Wuyishan trains are sold out.
💡 Tip: When booking on Trip.com or 12306.cn, search for both 武夷山北 and 南平市 to see all available options.
🚕 Transport: Pre-arranged car or taxi
📏 Distance: ~110 mi (177 km)
⏱ Duration: ~1.5 – 2 hours
💰 Cost: ~¥300–500 RMB (~€38–62)
This is a longer taxi ride compared to Option A, heading north from Nanping through the mountains to Wuyishan area. The route follows major roads and expressways before reaching the same mountain roads into Jiangxi Village.
💡 Tip: For this option, it’s essential to pre-arrange transport from the retreat, as finding a taxi willing to drive 2 hours at Nanping station may be difficult.
✅ Total journey time (Option B): ~5h 00min – 6h 00min (including airport processing + station waiting)
✅ Total transfers: 1 (walk to train station → train → taxi)
⚠️ Longer taxi ride but more train options available
Nanping City Station → Jiangxi Village
The alternative route from Nanping City Station is a longer drive (approximately 2 hours, 110 miles) heading north through the mountains. The route passes through Jian’ou and Shaowu before reaching the Wuyishan area. While longer, this can be a good option when Wuyishan North trains are fully booked.
| Option A (Wuyishan North) | Option B (Nanping City) | |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 4h30 – 5h30 | 5h00 – 6h00 |
| Train time | 3h00 – 3h30 | 3h00 – 3h30 |
| Final taxi | 30 min (16 km) | 1.5–2h (177 km) |
| Total cost | ¥400–520 (~€50–65) | ¥580–880 (~€72–110) |
| Ease | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Best for | Everyone (recommended) | When Wuyishan trains sold out |
