Getting around China is incredibly easy once you know the right apps. In this guide, we’ll show you how to hail a taxi using the DiDi app and how to book high-speed rail tickets using the 12306 app and Trip.com.

We’ll walk you through each step with real examples for your journey to the China Flow Retreat on September 20th, 2025. 🇨🇳

🚕 Part 1: How to hail a taxi with DiDi
🚄 Part 2: How to book high-speed rail tickets

🚕 PART 1 — HOW TO HAIL A TAXI WITH DIDI

DiDi (滴滴出行, Dīdī Chūxíng) is China’s #1 ride-hailing app — think of it as China’s Uber. It works in all major cities and even in smaller towns like Wuyishan. The international version has a full English interface and accepts international payment methods.

Step 1 — Download the DiDi App

Search for “DiDi China: Ride Hailing” on Google Play or the App Store.

📥 Android: Google Play
📥 iOS: Search “DiDi” in the App Store

Key features:

  • ✅ English interface
  • ✅ Global phone number login
  • ✅ Bilingual communication with drivers
  • ✅ Visa/Mastercard payment support

Step 2 — Set Up Your Account

  1. Open DiDi and tap “Sign Up”
  2. Select your country code and enter your phone number
  3. Enter the SMS verification code
  4. Add a payment method: Go to Me → Payment → Add Card
  5. Add your Visa or Mastercard (or link your Alipay/WeChat Pay)

💡 Tip: Set the app language to English in Me → Settings → Language.

Step 3 — Book Your Ride

📅 Example: September 20th — Wuyishan Airport to the Retreat

  1. Open DiDi when you land at Wuyishan Airport
  2. Your pickup location is auto-detected (Wuyishan Airport / 武夷山机场)
  3. Tap “Where to?” and type: 福雀来 FUTURES (Futures Resort)
  4. Select “Express” (快车) — the most affordable option
  5. Tap “Confirm” — a driver will be assigned within 1–5 minutes
  6. Wait at the arrivals pickup area. The app shows the driver’s car model, plate number, and live location

💰 Expected cost: ¥50–80 (~€7–10)
⏱️ Travel time: ~25–30 minutes
📍 Distance: ~18 km

🔤 Useful Chinese phrases for your driver:

  • 我在机场出口等 — “I’m waiting at the airport exit”
  • 请到福雀来 FUTURES — “Please go to Futures Resort”
  • 谢谢 — “Thank you”

💡 Pro tip: DiDi has a built-in translation chat — type in English and it auto-translates to Chinese for your driver, and vice versa! 🎉

DiDi Tips & Tricks

  • 🔋 Save your destination offline — Screenshot the Chinese address (福雀来 FUTURES, 武夷山市) in case you lose signal
  • 🚗 Vehicle types: Express (快车) is cheapest, Premier (优享) for comfort, Luxury (豪华) for premium cars
  • Pre-book rides — You can schedule a ride up to 2 days in advance (great for airport pickups)
  • 💳 Payment: International cards work, but linking Alipay or WeChat Pay is smoother
  • 📱 No internet? You can also hail a taxi the old-fashioned way at the airport — just show the driver the address on your phone

🚄 PART 2 — HOW TO BOOK HIGH-SPEED RAIL TICKETS

China’s high-speed rail network is one of the best in the world — fast, affordable, comfortable, and incredibly punctual. If you’re traveling from Shanghai or Fuzhou to the retreat, you’ll want to book your train tickets in advance.

There are two ways to book:

Option A — Trip.com (Recommended)

Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) is the easiest way for international travelers to book Chinese train tickets. It has a full English interface, accepts international credit cards, and sends e-tickets directly to your phone.

  1. Download the Trip.com app or visit trip.com
  2. Create an account with your email and phone number
  3. Tap “Trains” on the home screen
  4. Enter your route and date (see example below)
  5. Select your preferred train and seat class
  6. Enter your passport number (required for ticket purchase)
  7. Pay with your credit card (Visa/Mastercard accepted)
  8. Receive your e-ticket via email and in the app

⚠️ Important: You’ll need your physical passport to collect tickets at the station if self-service machines don’t accept foreign passports. Go to the manual ticket window (人工售票) with your booking confirmation.

Option B — 12306 (Official China Railway App)

The 12306 app (铁路12306) is China’s official railway booking platform. It recently added English language support and international passport registration.

How to register:

  1. Download “铁路12306” from your app store
  2. Select English language
  3. Tap “Register” → choose “Passport” as ID type
  4. Fill in your personal details exactly as on your passport
  5. Complete face verification
  6. Add a payment method (Alipay or WeChat Pay recommended)

🌐 Website: www.12306.cn/en

💡 Tip: If the 12306 app feels complex, use Trip.com instead — it’s much easier for first-time visitors.

📅 EXAMPLE: SEPTEMBER 20TH — SHANGHAI TO WUYISHAN

Here’s exactly how to book your train for the China Flow Retreat:

Search for:

  • 📍 From: Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥)
  • 📍 To: Wuyishan North (武夷山北)
  • 📅 Date: September 20, 2025

What you’ll see:

Multiple high-speed trains (G-series) run this route daily. Typical options:

Train Departs Arrives Duration 2nd Class
G1691 07:28 11:03 3h 35m ~¥366
G355 09:13 13:28 4h 15m ~¥430
G1695 13:00 16:54 3h 54m ~¥366

Prices and schedules are approximate — check Trip.com or 12306 for exact availability.

Seat classes explained:

  • 🪑 2nd Class (二等座) — comfortable reclining seats, power outlets, good legroom (~¥350–430)
  • 💺 1st Class (一等座) — wider seats, more space, quieter car (~¥550–700)
  • 👑 Business Class (商务座) — lie-flat seats, premium service (~¥1,000+)

💡 Our recommendation: 2nd Class is excellent — clean, spacious, and great value. Book an early morning train to arrive in time for a relaxed afternoon at the retreat.

🏛️ AT THE TRAIN STATION

  1. Arrive 30–45 minutes early — stations have airport-style security screening
  2. Collect your ticket: Use the manual ticket window (人工售票/取票) with your passport and booking confirmation. Some newer stations now accept passport scans at self-service machines
  3. Find your platform: Check the departure boards for your train number (e.g., G1691). Boards display in Chinese and English
  4. Board the train: Your ticket shows the car number (车厢) and seat number (座位). Line up at the correct boarding zone on the platform
  5. Arriving at Wuyishan North: Exit the station and use DiDi or take a taxi to Futures Resort (~45 min, ¥80–100)

💡 TRAIN TRAVEL TIPS

  • 📱 Book 2–4 weeks in advance — popular routes sell out, especially around holidays
  • 🛂 Passport required — both for booking and boarding. Keep it with you at all times
  • 🔌 Power outlets — available under every seat (Type A/C Chinese plug). Bring a universal adapter!
  • 🍜 Food & drinks — trolley service sells snacks, instant noodles, and drinks on board. You can also buy food at the station before boarding
  • 📶 WiFi — not reliable on trains. Download offline maps and entertainment before boarding
  • 🚫 No smoking — strictly enforced on all high-speed trains
  • 🧳 Luggage — overhead racks for carry-on, larger bags go at the end of each car. No weight limits!
  • 🚻 Restrooms — clean Western-style toilets available in every car

✅ YOU'RE ALL SET!

With DiDi for taxis and Trip.com or 12306 for train tickets, you’re fully equipped to travel across China like a local. Both apps work in English and accept international payment methods.
